Looking back so that we may look ahead…

Chapter 5 has incorporated concepts from all of the previous chapters.  It uses the integer rules from Chapter 2.  It adds and subtracts like terms (in fractional form) and solves equations…all based from Chapter 3.  It also extends our work with monomials (Chapter 4) by multiplying and dividing them.

As you may have noticed, mathematics is like building a house.  You have to have a foundation in order to continue building the next level.  If there are foundational gaps, we can sometimes fill them in as we go along, but at other times, these gaps can cause an entire section of the house to collapse.

Your assignment:  Look through Chapters 7 and 13.  Pick at least three sections and discuss how you think you will need to incorporate knowledge from Chapters 2-5.  Be specific.  Then answer the following questions:

1)  What is the most difficult section we have covered thus far?  Why was this more difficult than the other sections?

2)  Do you still have foundational gaps in your mathematical knowledge?  (aka: Are there concepts that you still do not understand?)  If so, what are they?  Be honest.

I would have to that the three sections that I think you will need to incorporate knowledge from Chapters 2-5 are Solving Equations with variables on each sides, Inequalities and Probabiltity of compund events because they all have to do with advance fractions and variables.

I believe that we will have to use LCD in the 7-3 (inequalities), in 7-1 we will also use two-step equations while solving equations with variables, and we will also have to use our adding and subtracting skills while we solve inequalities in 7-4.

I believe that the hardest is adding and subtracting fractions, but now I understand everything.

I think that the hardest part of math that we have done, is when there are very long equations that if you do something wrong, then the whole problem will be messed us. Especially when there are a lot of variables and exponents in the problem. I don’t really have any problems (anymore) but i still mess up when I see a problem and don’t see the negative signs in it!!!!!!! THAT MAKES ME SO MAD!!!!!!!!!

    Well…3 sections?
7-5, “Solving Inequalities by Multiplying or Dividing” because we have practiced before how to divide and multiply variables.
7-6, “Solving Multi-Step Inequalities” because we have practiced before how to solve two-step equations, and we will need this to continue.
7-1, “Solving Equations with Variables on Each Side”, for the same reason as 7-6.
    1. The hardest section, to us, was 5-8, “Measures of Central Tendency”, but only when the numbers are very big, because it gets sort of confusing.
    2. Negative are a bit confusing, to be honest.

In chapter 7, lessons 1 and 2 are to solve equations but with the variables on both sides, so to do this we needed to know how to solve equations with variables on them. Lesson 3-7 is about inequalities, so here, we will use the greater than and less than symbols. Lesson 13-1 is about polynomials, so we will need to use what we learned about monomials. I think that the hardest chapter so far has been chapter 4. This is because it has too many information. Some gaps that I still have are negative numbers and variables.

  • 6    Adrian Seidner // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:13 pm

    1. I would have to say that the most difficult section we covered so far was measures of central tendency because it was really long.

    2. I think that I dont any have foundational gaps in my mathematical knowledge but however I might forget some of these lessons during the vacation. I honestly believe I understand everything we covered so far.

I think chapter 7 is very important because equations are very important.

  • 8    Sthefano A. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:16 pm

In chapter 7-3 i think we may need to use fraction multiplication when dealing with decimals. In chapter 8-5 we are going to learn rate changes and we are going to use multiplying different integers and variables. In 8-7 we study linear equations which need to know 2 step solving equations which is in chapter 2.
The most difficult lesson for me was the fraction dividing (I got confused). I got confused in the keep, change, flip. I thing I have a gap in the arithmetic and geometric sequences.

The hardest section for me was adding and subtracting ffractions with different demoninators (section 5-7) . Becuase you have to find the LCM, that is the thing that annoys me. It takes so much time to do it. There is nothing I don’t understand. And I am being honest.

  • 10    Brian S // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:17 pm

I think that the easiest part has been the section in which you did the problems with multiplying and dividing exponents. The hardest part was when you had to do very long equation with many exponents and variables, because sometimes it takes a long time and also you have a high risk of getting it wrong, so i think that that was the hardest section. I dont make those mistakes anymore, because im used to it, but for me, those equations were the only ones that were a little hard, but apart from that all of it was easy.

  • 11    Roxanne M. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:18 pm

I thought the section of adding and subtracting unlike fractions was harder. I thought it was harder than the other ones was because you had to be careful with the negative signs and you need to change the denominators when they aren’t alike and than add which got me confused sometimes because sometimes the denominator doesn’t have the same number as the other fraction.
No I don’t have anymore gaps from chapter 5. I pretty much get everything from there.

  • 12    Abbey N // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:18 pm

I think that chapter 7 is about first, solving equations with equations on each side, and not only having one variable in the whole problem. And then on to Inequalities?????????? and then adding and subtracting Inequalities??????????? and on with mult./div. Solving multistep equations and so on!!!!!!:) Chapter 8 is on graphing and stuff and Functions. Chapter 9 is on real numbers and TRIANGLES!!!!!! Chapter 10 is on 2 dimensional figures. Chapter 11 is on 3 dimensional figures and chapter 12 is on Statistics and Probability. And last, chapter 13 is on Polynomials and nonlinear functions.

  • 13    sam // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:19 pm

We should use our knowledge with monomials to solve for polynomials. I think all sections where equally hard and none were really more difficult than others. I don’t think I have any gaps in my math education.

  • 14    Daivd M // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:19 pm

To solve the problems in 7-2 you have to use distributive property and then you solve it by using substraction, addition, multiplication, and division. To solve the problems in 7-1 you need to know a lot of things that are in chapter 5. You also ned to know almost everything in chapter 5 to do the problems in chapter 7, section 7-6.
The most difficult lesson that we have studied is prime factorization. It wasn’t really difficult, but sometimes long. No, i don’t have any foundational gaps.

  • 15    Rosalie M. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:20 pm

The hardest section for me in chapter 5 was adding and subtracting unlike fractions. I thought it was hard because there were many steps before you can start adding/subtracting them together.
At first, i had a hard time understanding why 0.6 repeating was bigger than 0.6 when 0.6 is closer to 0. But know i understand.

The first sections of chapter 7 are talking about equations with variables on both sides of the equals sign and we have learned to do this with only one side, so it will be easier to do both sides once we get to chapter 7.

I think the most difficult section that we have done in math has been adding and subtracting fractions in chapter 5, with variables and different denominators. I think it was more difficult than other sections because it’s confusing and a little mistake can cause you a lot of trouble in all the problem. In chapter 4 solving large equations to solve for one single variable was very difficult, it’s confusing and it takes a while to understand the accurate way to solve them.
I understand most of the concepts, but sometimes when there are negative signs, you don’t know if the answer will turn out negative or positive. Sometimes I get mixed up while adding and subtracting fractions with variables.

  • 19    David Z. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:24 pm

In this chapter I think some of the most important math concepts we learned where the ones about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, fractions since most of our careers in the future will be dependent on our skill with these.

  • 20    Claudia Soto // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:24 pm

    Ch. 7, Section 7-1
    Solving Equations with variables
-Variables are important while solving equations and fractions

    Ch. 7, Section 7-4
Solving Inequalities by Adding & Subtracting
-Negative and positive numbers can be confused while adding & subtracting, so we need to learn the right way

    Ch. 7, Section 7-5
Solving Inequalities by Multiplying or Dividing
-The same thing than with adding & subtracting negative and positive numbers, we have to learn how to do it right

The hardest section was Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences. It involves lots of numbers and rules. We just started with this section and have studied it very little.

  • 21    Kartik C. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:24 pm

I think section 7-4 is important along with section 7-5 and 7-6 becuase those sections have th basic operations we have to learn in different ways.

  • 22    Ariel B. and Wendy L. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:25 pm

The first sections of chapter 7 are talking about equations with variables on both sides of the equals sign and we have learned to do this with only one side, so knowing how to do one side, will help us in chapter 7.

  • 23    To-b // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:25 pm

For section 7-2, we are going to need to use our knowledge for solving equations and using the distributive property. For section 7-6, we are going to need our knowledge for two step equations and inequalities. We are going to combine both. for section 8-9, we are going to use our knowledge for graphs and equations.

I think the most difficult section we have studied yet, is the adding integers. I think this was difficult because it was difficult for me to understand.

In this moment I can’t remember anything I couldn’t understand.

  • 24    Giancarlo B. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:27 pm

I think chapter 7 because we learn to add, div, mult, an div equalities and inequalities.
The hardest section I think was measures of central tendency.

  • 25    Flower M. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:30 pm

7-6: solving multi-step inequalities. We learned to do 2 step equations, so it will help us learn more.
7-1 and 7-2: We learned how to solve equations with numbers on each side, and this will be more specific, just like the example before.
7-5: we already learned like terms.
    1. Hardest section was the measures of central tendency because the mean was hard to get wih big numbers.
    2. For me it is complicated with long algebraic expressions that have parentheses, because it confuses me which to do firs.

  • 26    Roxanne M. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:30 pm

In chapter 5 we learned how to do subtracting and adding unlike fractions and decimals but in chapter 7 we did the same things but there greater than, less than, and equal to.

  • 27    Roxanne M. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:30 pm

Lessons 1 and 2 of chapter 7 is about solving equations with variables on both sides, it will help you to solve the equation if you know how to solve the equation with variables. In lesson 3 Inequalities is talking about less than, and greater than. In chapter 13 is talking about polynomials it will help us if we know what is monomail

    1. The most difficult thing we have done is in chapter 4 section 8, scientific notation because it was kind of confusing. One thing that made this confusing was having to add all of those zeros and putting all of the decimals in the right place.
    2. I (Ariel) still don’t fully understand scientific notation.

  • 30    David Z. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:33 pm

    1. In my opinion one of the most difficult sections was the one about scientific notation. Since all the numbers where very long and complicated.
    2. So far I think I understand everything.

  • 31    Tina L. // Dec 16, 2008 at 1:33 pm

I think scientific notation was the most difficult part for me in all the lessons, sometimes i got confused and I did understand everything.
